After decades of building drum kits out of birch, Tama chose to add bubinga to the mix with their Starclassic Performer BB series. This combination gives the Performer BB series drums both the punch and aggression of birch, and the warm, deep lows of bubinga. This five-piece shell set consists of a 22 x 20-inch virgin bass drum, 10 x 6.5 and 12 x 7-inch toms, and 14 x 12 and 16 x 14-inch floor toms with a stylish Platinum Sparkle finish.

The Tama PP52HXZS-PTS shells

The tom and floor tom shells are made of three inner plies of bubinga with four outer plies of birch, while the bass drum has an additional ply of birch. By keeping the plies of wood thin, however, Tama managed to keep the shells thin as well, so they measure in at just six and eight millimetres thick. For optimal resonance of the shells, this drum kit is equipped with the StarCast tom mounting system, which suspends the toms from their hoops. Furthermore, the floor toms have air cushioned legs, which have a special air chamber that prevents the vibrations from disappearing into the ground.

Easy to set up

Both the toms and floor toms are equipped with the Quick-Lock system, that allows you to put them in their ideal positions within seconds. Because this shell set has a virgin bass drum, the toms will need to be suspended from a separate (cymbal) stand. For this purpose, there are two MC69 tom holders included with the set. Furthermore, for added stability, the bass drum legs are attached with die-cast brackets. The tom and floor tom hoops are entirely die-cast, which means they have no structural weak spots, ensuring they'll keep your tuning consistent across the drumhead. All hardware on these shells features a chrome finish.
