La caja china es un instrumento de percusión pequeño de la familia de los idiófonos, un taco de madera rectangular y hueco, lleva una ranura que sirve como caja de resonancia. Este instrumento se percute con una baqueta dura o también con una maza. El tamaño varía desde algunos cm de un modelo a otro hasta llegar incluso al medio metro. Se utiliza normalmente como un instrumento de ritmo y se combina normalmente con otros de percusión. El groove block es la versión moderna de la caja china. Este tipo de instrumento suena muy potente y puede utilizarse como alternativa al cencerro.
