Moog - a beloved brand that has really earned its excellent reputation - has issued their Tolex Minimoog Voyager XL in an exceptionally limited number: only 100 of these analogue synthesizers have been made available world-wide. Not everyone will know this, but back in the day Moog started a real revolution in pop music with their synths. Developed to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Moog Modular, the Tolex XL is a hand-built synthesizer with a special finish made of Tolex - the leather-like vinyl material that is also often found on guitar combos - that really brings out the great authentic looks of this modular synth.

Characteristics of the Moog Tolex Minimoog Voyager XL analogue synthesizer

If you're already familiar with the Voyager XL, the Tolex XL will be a feast of recognition. It has the same vast control panel with patch connectors, only the colours differ here and there. At heart, the Tolex XL is a monophonic synthesizer with 61 velocity-sensitive keys with aftertouch. Sound generation is made possible by three analogue oscillators, which allow for sync and FM options between specific oscillators. Moog's renowned and awarded filters and two envelopes (volume and filter) add the final touches to the core sound of the synth. And that's when things really start to get really interesting...

Modularity

The patch connectors on the left side of the control panel allow you to expand the functionality of the Tolex XL, and even to control it. Would you like to make the filter wobble using the LFO? You can. Would you like to control the volume with the modulation wheel? No problem. Would you like to operate the ribbon controller using the pitch? Suit yourself! Simply make the right patch connections, and you end up with a synthesizer that offers so many more sounds and expression options than you'd think at first glance.

Possibilities

Both on stage and in the studio, the Tolex Minimoog Voyager XL is bound to make quite an impression. Not only does it look fantastic, it sounds amazing too - this is a real Moog with analogue oscillators, after all. As it is a monophonic instrument, you'll mostly use it for leads, but this analogue synth is capable of producing bass lines as well.
