Sure to appeal to fretless devotees as well as double bassists, Ibanez Bass Workshop presents the UB805: an electro-acoustic upright bass with a five-string range and AeroSilk pickup system. This model is more than just a compact and easier to carry alternative to a full-sized double bass - it has the comfy and familiar feel of a bass-guitar-style 34 inch scale length and the fingerboard has even been finished with a friendly set of position dots, presenting a possible gamechanger for standard five-string bassists. The UB805 comes pre-wrapped in a tailor-made gig bag and complete with a TAMA Roadpro stand.
The Ibanez UB805 Upright Bass: Intuitive Control
Whether plucking or bowing, the natural sound of this Ibanez Bass Workshop offering is captured in full by a progressive AeroSilk system, which plants a piezo pickup inside the custom MR5 bridge. String vibrations are registered with precision and translated into balanced and articulate, highly defined sound thanks to the onboard AeroSilk preamp, and via the simple yet intuitive Active Tone controls, the output can be moulded and shaped at will.

In short, I am loving this upright. It has been modelled really well to play comfortably for long periods, (which is important to me as I’ve got all sorts of shoulder and neck aches and pains from years of self abuse working as a nurse.) Hence, a guitar is difficult to ‘wear’ for long periods when gigging.
I’ve wanted an upright for years and the release of the UB804/805 provides that fretless sound but - with a twiddle of the knobs - a near upright acoustic sound too (albeit a pedal or two might help refine that.) The price was an issue. It’s a rare thing for me to buy new gear due to cost of living etc, but Ibanez make trusted good quality products and along with the sound, the build, feel and looks are spot on - everything you’d expect from Ibanez. And what helped make it possible for me was that one came up as ‘B’ stock - a bargain I didn’t want to let go. The quality of what I received was as good as new (thank you Bax music). My next purchase will be a bow (French or German 🤔)
