If you thought tube amplifiers are always large, heavy devices, think again. With the PF-20T Portaflex, Ampeg has issued a compact, lightweight bass guitar amp head that delivers no fewer than 20 watts of pure tube power. It's equipped with 6V6 tubes - famous from the Fender Bassman, among others - which tells connoisseurs all they need to know: this amp produces a rich sound with a tight, well-defined low end. Put those 6V6 tubes to work, and you can rely on a delectable growl.

Construction of the Ampeg PFT-20T

Ampeg has managed to keep the PF-20T incredibly compact, thanks to an ingenuous design that gives the transformers and tubes their own housing. The relatively vulnerable tubes are protected by a sturdy cage, which can easily be removed to replace the occasional tube. Two 6V6 power amp tubes and a 12AU7 preamp tube work together to deliver an impressive 20 watts of power.

Good things comes in small packages

The Ampeg PF-20T may be small, but when it comes to sound and construction quality, it's just as good as any other Ampeg. An extensive range of tone controls allows you to shape your sound to perfection. Take the frequency knob, for instance, which enables you to adjust the effective frequency range of the mid range. The Ampeg PF-20T is just as much at home on small stages as it is in the studio. It doesn't require a speaker load, which means you can record directly via a DI box without a load box.
