Years back, Tama was the first drum designer to introduce shells made from bubinga wood and has since become pretty familiar with the material, getting the shell production down to an absolute art. As a result, the Tama Star Bubinga Series encompasses some incredible looking and sounding shells that pull out every bit of the warmth and lush tone that bubinga wood has to offer.

The Tama Star Bubinga TBS1465S Snare

Exclusive to Tama's bubinga shell sets, the Tama Star TBS1465S snare drum has been given a Natural Indian Laurel paint-job. This professional snare has a 14 inch diameter and 6.5 inch depth with 4.5 millimetre-thick shell walls made up of five plies of bubinga. The exterior has also been sealed in an extra sixth layer of cordia wood which perfectly compliments and completes the full and deep shell sound.

Thinner Shell = Thicker Sound

The 4.5 millimetre shell might sound extra-thin compared to other models within this price bracket, but since bubinga is such a dense and solid wood, you don't actually need to use all that much. In fact, the less you use the more sound you get out of it. What results is maximum depth, warmth and masses of projection, making this snare ideal for low to mid-low tunings - especially since this model also features a set of 9 millimetre thick Sound Focus Rings.

One-Piece Lugs

During the design stage, Tama has done everything humanly possible limit hardware-to-shell contact and one of the standout solutions has to be the unique One-Piece lugs. Just eight of them have been fitted, reducing the overall weight of this snare and resulting in a more open and even more resonant sound. Three air vents have also been integrated into the shell, so air (and therefore sound) is dispersed and projected from all angles, keeping the tone dry and focussed. According to Tama tradition, the bearing edges are just as on-point, guaranteeing optimal vibrational transfer from drumhead to shell, while the Linear Drive snare strainer polishes off the design in masterful style, making contact with the resonant head without the usual 'slap' that comes with more standard strainers and reducing unnecessary drumhead wear. This feature also supports silent snare switching mid set.
