MOD Devices MOD DUO X Standalone Software Audio Processor
General
The MOD Devices MOD DUO X is a strange little box that acts as a standalone software audio processor so that the laptop can be left at home. This little device could be seen as a computer packed with plug-ins including effects, virtual instruments and MIDI utilities and an operating system of its very own.
The MOD DUO X: The Lay-Out!
The face of the compact aluminium casing is lined with ten rotary knobs, six buttons and two displays. In principle, two completely independent audio signals can be set up in chains, so in terms of software, the MOD DUO X is modular. A MIDI in and output is provided via DIN and USB as well as two CV inputs and two outputs supported by stereo preamps, and the CV outputs can be used to hook up a set of headphones for onstage monitoring.
A Standard of Its Own
The MOD Devices MOD DUO X works with plug-ins, but not the standard plug-ins you're probably used to. Instead, MOD Devices have developed an entirely bespoke system and furnished it with a self-curated library. Inside, you'll find 500 plug-ins that can be downloaded for free, including plug-ins from known names like MDA and TAL. The standard is open source and based on the renowned MAX/MSP. As such, the plug-ins just need authorising and nothing needs installing.

This is an excellent device and quite deep. On YouTube "Red Means Recording" and "Inkie" give good tutorials / demonstrations of the Mod Duo X. Essentially the Mod Duo X uses the concept of a virtual pedal board that can be edited via a chrome browser. The inputs (two mono audio or L R stereo + Midi + CV or expression) can be routed through effects or generators (eg synths or e-pianos) that you place on the pedal board. The pedal board can be saved and even shared with the "Mod" community. The pedal board devices can be edited via the browser or have parameters assigned to the knobs on the Mod Duo X such that it can work stand alone. With the latest update there are 6 pages of pagination. One final point, because it works from the chrome browser, its compatibility is fantastic. For example it is easy to connect and edit with a Chromebook!
